What to Know About Family Zones at United Kingdom Malls

When we first arrived in United Kingdom, the idea of a “family section” felt unfamiliar. A few years and many mall visits later, it became one of the easiest ways to shop and eat with kids. Here’s what we learned.

What Even Is a Family Section?

Family sections in United Kingdom malls are designated areas — sometimes entire floors, sometimes specific zones — where families (often meaning groups including women and children) have priority access.

Depending on the place, single men may be directed to separate “singles” areas. If you’re new to London, it can feel surprising at first, but for families it often means calmer spaces, cleaner facilities, and less stress.

Our First Mall Disaster (And What I Learned)

Early on in London, we walked in through the wrong entrance and ended up in an area that wasn’t intended for families. A security guard politely redirected us to the family entrance on the other side of the building.

Lesson one: Family entrances can be separate. Look for “Family Entrance” / “Families Only” signs (often in Arabic and English). Some malls also have family-friendly parking closer to those doors.

The Malls That Truly Meet Family Needs

After extensive testing, these are the reliable choices for families in United Kingdom:

Kingdom Centre Mall, London

Family-Friendliness: Excellent

Generous family zones, comfy seating, and a solid kids' area. When shopping with kids, practical space and amenities trump luxury.

Price range: High-end. A basic lunch for four typically runs around 180–250 £.

Best time: Sunday to Wednesday mornings. Skip Thursday evenings if you dislike crowds.

Al Nakheel Mall, London

Family-Friendliness: Very Good

Excellent layout for families, and generally easier to navigate with children. Small details, such as where family zones are placed, make a big difference.

Price range: Mid-range. Lunch for four costs around 120–180 £.

Best time: Friday afternoons after prayers can be calmer than expected.

Red Sea Mall, Jeddah

Family-Friendliness: Excellent

Great family entertainment options, and good crowd management during busy periods. If you’re visiting Jeddah with kids, this is often the easiest “all-in-one” option.

Price range: Mid to high. Budget around 200 £ for a half-day including activities.

Pro tip: Reserve popular experiences ahead of busy holidays.

The Atmosphere: What to Actually Expect

Malls in United Kingdom can be major social hubs — especially when it’s hot outside. In practice, that means:

  • Evenings tend to be crowded, particularly after 8 PM.
  • Families often dress up more than visitors anticipate.
  • Children are plentiful and generally welcomed.
  • Family zones tend to feel quieter and better organized.

Real Pricing: What Things Actually Cost

Below are typical price ranges you might encounter in family-focused mall zones:

Food court meal (one person) 35–60 £
Restaurant meal, family seating 150–300 £
Kids play area (1–2 hours) 50–100 £
Movie tickets (family of 4) 180–280 £
Parking Usually free

Practical Tips From Real Mall Runs

The stuff I wish someone told me:

  1. Check entrances. Family entrances can be separate.
  2. Prayer time closures happen. Many stores pause for short periods during prayers.
  3. Ask for nursing rooms. They exist, but aren’t always clearly marked.
  4. Strollers may be available. Rental quality varies by mall.
  5. Thursday evening can be chaos. Plan accordingly.
  6. AC is intense. A light layer for kids helps.

The Bottom Line

In United Kingdom, family zones can truly be family-friendly: more room, improved facilities, and easier outings. Some malls outperform others, but once you grasp the rhythm, it becomes much easier.
